Idol me this, Idol me that.

Batman's foe Enigma, also known as the Riddler, was often quoted saying "Riddle me this, riddle me that" before launching into his attempts to boggle the mind, often thwarted by the hero. What I need is a hero to clear up the enigmas that are idols. Or rather, the fastidiouness with which I cling to them. Emotional jams line the construction-filled higway between heart and mind, not just once, but continually throughout my life, piled up behind the wreckages that are my idols.

It's like Trinity Lane in Nashville. There are always wrecks on Trinity Lane. Every morning the radio traffic guy spouts some blockage and slowing at Trinity Lane. No big suprise here. What is suprising, however, is that people don't take it easier at Trinity Lane to begin with, knowing that it's an accident-prone area. Riddle me this...

I took a break from my reading yesterday to go for a run. As I was cooling down, I walked around and sat by a monument across from my house. The monument was set up in memorial of the Battle of Nashville 1874. It has a man in the middle of two horses, a banner waving between them with the word UNITY written on it. Above them all sits a stone angel-- guardian and watcher of the place. There is a poem engraved on one side of the monument reflecting on the fact that Blue and Gray must set aside the past and the deaths and come together as Americans, standing as one. I found the message of Unity very heartening, but what I thought more interesting was the material with which the sculptor had decided to form the man and beasts... a sort of deep brown metal. What I saw then in front of me, was a black man vying for unity among Americans, not just Blue and Gray, but White and Black as well. I sat by the monument for a while and, for once, thought the world around me much more interesting and inviting than the fantastical hard back world waiting on the coffee table.
